About Us

Erin and Colin Zedreck have owned and operated The Berkley Creek Pet Retreat for the last five years in New Castle, Pennsylvania. With personal and professional ties to the area, Erin and Colin felt a pull to look to move their business to Mars and were lucky enough to find the perfect place to recreate what they had in New Castle, in Adams Township. Erin has worked within the Mars Area School District for 14 years, and Colin is a graduate of the Class of 2004. 

Many have asked how we got into this line of work and how this business came to be.

The origin story of that story can be summed up with one word:

Mia

“Sweet Mia” has been our puppy (and truly, our first child) from the time she was eight weeks old. In working to train their new puppy, Colin discovered that, like his grandfather, who bred and competed with dogs over the course of 37 years, he also had a natural gift and passion for working with dogs.

By the time Mia was one, she and Colin were traveling and competing in various events. As a team, they have earned titles or qualifying passes in 6 different disciplines:

Shed Hunting (UKC)

Hunt Tests (AKC)

Dock Diving (AKC)

Scent Work (AKC)

Lure Coursing (AKC)

Therapy Work (AKC)

In 2017, in anticipation of an upcoming family trip overseas, Erin and Colin began looking for a boarding facility for their Sweet Mia to stay. What was soon discovered was that many of the boarding facilities in the area had very limited outdoor play areas, indoor areas not ideal for a dog’s long term joint health, inconsistent individuals working each day and large, overwhelming numbers in playtime sessions. With each facility tour or trial play day for Mia, Erin and Colin were finding that this was a common thread across the board, and that Mia was uncomfortable and unhappy in her experiences.

Several months later, Erin and Colin found themselves in the unique position to take over an existing boarding business and enter the industry they had recently become so familiar with as dog parents, themselves. 

With their own recent experiences at the forefront of their mind, Erin and Colin set a goal to create a facility that not only was designed and operated with the dog’s best interest in mind, but truly treating every dog as if they were their “Sweet Mia” coming to stay.  

In those five years since this opportunity became their life, Erin and Colin added another furry family member to their crew — Milo, the large-tongued dog in the photo above. Milo came to be a Zedreck after his previous family could not provide the care or life that he deserved, and returned him to where he was previously bred. Milo brought some baggage with him, including different anxieties, but he has flourished in his life with Erin and Colin, including becoming a certified therapy dog and the unanimous best snuggle partner. Milo’s unique qualities have only made Erin and Colin better dog owners and more understanding of every dog’s unique traits that they bring to their stay. 

When Erin and Colin finally found the perfect property to recreate their boarding business in a location that brought them closer to family, friends and work, they knew they had to make the move! One perk of starting anew was that they could create a facility of their dreams from the start! 

And so, the journey of creating the Berkley Creek Pet Retreat 2.0 began, with the same characteristics and values in mind as what they have cultivated previously. Erin and Colin are very excited to be moving to the Mars area, one that they both have a long history with, and where they hope to build their lives and be an integral part of the community.

Because of our referral based onboarding process, we appreciate your patience in advance. We will steadily handle our requests as they come in, but it will take time to thoroughly ensure that we accept dogs who get along.
